Pot Bellies Can Kill: 22-year-Olds Are Having Pot Bellies – Family Physician Specialist

Dr. Kwame Ofori Koramoah, a Family Physician Specialist at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, has stated that young adults as young as 22 years old are developing pot bellies.

This, he said, is increasingly serious since potbelly can kill, even if not immediately, due to the risk factors linked with it.

"Potbellies have the ability to kill, but not in that moment." Having a potbelly raises your risk of contracting any non-communicable disease. Even if you have diabetes, losing just 0.5cm of your midsection will substantially lower your blood sugar levels. So, having truncal obesity raises your risk of having a heart attack, which can be fatal; hypertension, which can be fatal; diabetes, which can be fatal; and cancers, which may be fatal."

Pot belly is also known as truncal obesity or central obesity, according to him.

"When you say truncal obesity, you're referring to an accumulation of fat around the stomach that has a bad influence on a person's health," he explained.

On February 16, 2021, while discussing the topic "Pot Belly: Good Living or Health Disorder?" on the GTV breakfast show, Dr. Koramoah made this argument. He claims that a potbelly is caused by a combination of circumstances and should not be attributed just to a high-calorie diet.

It's possible that people believe it's all about eating and not exercise. No. There are numerous aspects to consider. They can be hormonal; if your hormones are out of whack, you may experience these symptoms. Your level of activity can also contribute to this; if you don't exercise frequently, at the very least, you should exercise for at least 30 minutes five days a week. You sit a lot and don't walk around if you don't do that one, that sedentary lifestyle. "That one would go up," he added.

The Doctor stated that there are many truths concerning potbelly that people should be aware of in order to avoid spreading myths about it.

"Other illnesses, such as hypothyroidism, can cause you to gain weight in your stomach." So, if you have hypothyroidism, your metabolic rate is a little bit slower, and you may have fat around your midsection, so there are a lot of things we need to know that can cause that; it's not just eating late at night, though those are factors; it could also be a high choleric intake, such as a particular meal, or eating a lot of fatty foods. They can cause you to gain weight in your midsection," he said.

He did say, however, that there are a variety of physical activities that may be done to treat truncal obesity, but that they should be done under the supervision of a doctor.

When it comes to exercise, you should have an exercise prescription. Anyone can exercise, but not everyone can do any form of exercise, so if you go to your family physician, they will give you an exercise prescription... So, it could be going for a stroll, skipping, lifting weights, or doing flexibility exercises. So there are a variety of workouts you may take to lose weight in the middle," he added.

Pot bellies have long been associated with the wealthy, owing to their diet and lack of activity.
