'Snowfall': Damson Idris Teases Season 5's Franklin Storyline

It's just a matter of days until Snowfall, the FX series about the rise of the crack cocaine trade in 1980s Los Angeles, returns. Damson Idris stars as Franklin Saint, a college dropout who begins his career as a cannabis dealer and rises through the ranks to become a prominent player in the industry.

He's more powerful and wealthy than he's ever been after five seasons. But, as Idris points out, everything good must come to an end. From the actor himself, here's what to expect in Season 5 of Snowfall.

Snowfall’: Damson Idris Previews Franklin’s Season 5 Storyline

The fifth season of Snowfall, which premieres on Wednesday, Feb. 23, finds Franklin enjoying a lot of victories while also dealing with a variety of challenges. "Into the meat of 1986," co-creator Dave Andron told Gold Derby, "when the violence was really building up, when you really started to sense the complete militarization of the LAPD, when the War on Drugs was on its approach to its climax."
Then there was this type of pop cultural explosion in South Central, with the rise of gangster rap and films like 'Straight Outta Compton,' and other things about to drop and explode up. He went on to say, "It's a major watershed moment for the area."
"So, without getting into too much character stuff," Andron said, "from the standpoint of history and kind of where we are in the arc of this thing, it's a really interesting time for us to plunk our characters into and see what happens."

Idris on what happens to Franklin in ‘Snowfall’ Season 5

In an interview with BlackTreeTV, Idris revealed more about the upcoming season. After struggling with so many various hurdles and roadblocks over the years, he added, viewers will finally get to watch Franklin triumph.
He stated of the role, "He's been through it all." "He's been beaten, shot, robbed, and imprisoned." We wanted to get to a point where he could finally enjoy what he had fought so hard for, and we do that this season."

"We leap 15 months forward from when he put the cane down, and he's expecting a baby, he's living in a penthouse, and he's enjoying the fruits of his labor," Idris said. "In 1986, he has about $100 million, which is insane. So I believe we'll see a more cheerful side of Franklin this year, but you know, all good things must come to an end."

The fifth season to introduce new characters into the mix

Angela Lewis (Aunt Louie), Amin Joseph (Jerome Saint), Isaiah John (Leon Simmons), Michael Hyatt (Cissy Saint), Carter Hudson (Teddy McDonald), Sergio Peris-Mencheta (Gustavo "El Oso" Zapata), DeRay Davis (Peaches), and Gail Bean (Wanda Bell) are among the cast members of Snowfall Season 5.

Season 5 of Snowfall introduces a number of new characters, including Franklin's newest love interest. Idris expects some backlash for his new relationship as one of our favorite Internet obsessions. "Hopefully, you guys don't dislike the relationship too much," he stated.

Season 5 of Snowfall premieres on FX on February 23 at 10 p.m. ET.
