Upper West Region : A retired lecturer was shot and killed in the Upper West Region over a land dispute.

Over a land dispute, a retired lecturer from Hilla Limann Technical University was shot and killed in Wa, Upper West Region.

Stephen Mane, a 64-year-old retired lecturer, was apparently shot at close range on Thursday [March 17, 2022].

The shot was fired from a pump-action gun, according to the police.

The person who fired the gun was apprehended and is being held in police custody on charges of murder and inflicting hurt.

According to reports, the suspect claimed he was being attacked and fired to defend himself.

Abdul Raman Yunusah, a 61-year-old businessman from Wa, has been identified by the police.

Dispute

According to the police, there is a land dispute between two families, Abdul Raman Yunusah on one side and the deceased on the other.

DCOP Peter Ndekugri, the Upper West Regional Police Commander, verified the event.

The police commander refuted media claims that Stephen Mane was murdered by a stray bullet while buying gas at a gas station.

Facts

According to DCOP Ndekugri, Abdul Raman Inusah and his family, on one side, and Mane, on the other, were fighting over a piece of land in Wa near the Shell filling station. They are both from the same extended family, he claims.

He stated the family had intended to meet on Wednesday (March 16, 2022) to settle the dispute, but "there was a funeral in the house yesterday [Wednesday] and they couldn't sit down to arbitrate." As a result, Inusah dispatched his men [back] to the construction site today."

According to DCOP Ndekugri, the other side went to sack the workers, and the workers called Inusah on the phone to tell him of the situation, adding that a group of around 50 people had forced them off the land.

The police commander stated that after learning of the event, SWAT was dispatched to the scene to try to restore order, but when they arrived, he [Inusah] had fired and scared the people away.

So the police promptly apprehended him and took him to the police station before transporting the casualty to the regional hospital, where Stephen Mane, the retired lecturer, was regrettably pronounced dead by the on-duty doctor.

Iddris Alhassan, 46, a University of Business Integrated Studies (UBIS) administrative staff member, Haruna Umar, 34, a driver, Hamza Hamid, 19, a student, and Amish Umar, a driver, were among those injured, according to the police commander.
