A senior high school student faked his kidnapping in order to extort money from his'stingy' mother.

A 17-year-old Senior High student was arrested for impersonating a kidnapping in order to extort money from his mother.

The Abia State Police Command arrested Obinna Nwatu, a SHS 3 student, after he admitted to arranging his kidnapping.

Obinna Nwatu claims he staged his kidnapping in order to extract money from his stingy mother, Mrs. Rose Nwatu.

CP Janet Agbede, the Commissioner of Police in Abia State, confirmed the arrest and stated that the kidnapping was reported by the suspect's brother, Wisdom Nwatu.

"Wisdom Nwatu reported his younger brother's kidnapping to the police. When he went to get a recharge card, he was kidnapped along Stadium road in Okpuala Ngwa by unknown hoodlums driving an ash-colored Sienna with an unknown registration number.

However, following an inquiry, the Command's Anti-kidnapping section apprehended one Chinaza Favour Ukaigwe, whose bank account was used to receive a ransom of N200,000 only. Following his detention, Chinaza Favour Ukaigwe told the police that Obinna Nwatu had staged his own kidnapping.

Obinna and one Favour Ugorji a.k.a. "Wizzy" approached him at his shop on Aba Road in Abia State, requesting that he give them his bank account so that they could use it to pay their baby sister's school fees. Mrs. Rose Nwatu paid in two hundred thousand naira (N200,000) as a ransom, according to the investigation. Obinna Nwatu and Ugorji received the money through the account.

Obinna Nwatu admitted that he was not kidnapped. He colluded with Favour Ugorji to go into hiding at a motel along Rhema University Road Aba, according to CP Janet Agbede.

Obinna Nwatu is in police custody right now, but his accomplice Favour, also known as Wizzy, is on the run.
