Virgin River Season 5: Everything we need to know

The Netflix hit Virgin River has a retro feel because it was inspired by old small-town shows like Friday Night Lights and Dawson's Creek. The pace is slow, the relationships take time to develop, and there aren't many gadgets.

But Netflix has moved quickly to take advantage of its unexpected success, renewing Virgin River for seasons 4 and 5 after season 3 came out. Now that season 4 of Virgin River is out, fans can't wait to find out when season 5 will come out and what it will be like.

We have good news and bad news about that: Unexpectedly, the filming for the fifth season was moved four months, from March 2022 to July 2022. Alexandra Breckenridge, who plays Mel, told Glamour during a conversation about This Is Us that Virgin River had been pushed back. "They've been trying to get me to come back since I've been on Virgin River," she said of This Is Us, which ended earlier this year. "The fifth season of Virgin River was supposed to start filming in March, but it was moved to July. So had we started when we were supposed to, I don't know that Sophie and Kevin [of This Is Us] would've ended up together."

Good news: What's on Netflix confirmed in mid-July that filming for season 5 of Virgin River has begun in British Columbia. In a July interview with PureWow, Annette O'Toole, who plays Hope, said that this was true: "I'm actually leaving tomorrow to film season five in Canada." And the Virgin River Instagram account doubled down on the news on July 18 by writing: "Our Season 5 cast at a table read. Yes, you did hear that correctly. We have already started making Season 5!" Fans noticed right away that Grayson Gurney, who played Ricky, was pictured at the table read, even though he had joined the Marines at the end of the fourth season.

Netflix has confirmed that season 5 will have a more diverse cast than previous seasons. Head of drama Jinny Howe told Deadline, "I think it's fair to say that [diversity] is going to continue to be a focus and something the audience will get to experience more of in season five." It's a top priority, and I think you'll see more diversity and acceptance in the Virgin River community as we grow it.

Season 5 of Virgin River is likely to have 12 episodes, like season 4, instead of the 10 episodes that were in seasons one through three.

Henderson talked to Glamour about what's coming up right after the first episode of the fifth season. "The stuff about babies gets very interesting. Even though I haven't read any of those scripts, I can say that we have some really nice... "A lot of things end, and then a lot of new things start, like new story lines," he said. "I can't tell you too much. I know that someone could leave. Someone could go."

He also said, "What I hope to see in season 5 is Mel and Jack getting closer to each other instead of being pushed apart by problems, because I think that's what the audience wants to see." There will be bumps, but it will be nice to see them grow up and grow closer to each other.

Breckenridge, on the other hand, told New Beauty that she thought some of the best episodes were in season five. "I think this season has started off well, and we'll soon be getting to some pretty heavy episodes. She said, "They are very intense, and I think they are some of the best episodes we've ever done."
