"Little House on the Prairie: Alison Arngrim was the one who taught Melissa Gilbert about tampons on

Melissa Gilbert, who plays Mary in Little House on the Prairie, says she grew up in a safe place. She was glad that she could talk to her co-stars about things that were important to her personally. The actor who played Laura Ingalls on the TV show says that Alison Arngrim, who was also on the show, helped her understand one of life's mysteries: tampons.

Melissa Gilbert talks about "Little House on the Prairie"

In 1967, Gilbert had a small part in the movie The Reluctant Astronaut. The next year, she was on The Dean Martin Show for a Christmas episode in 1968. In an episode called "The Judgment" from 1972, Gilbert played Spratt's child.

Gilbert has also played parts in Without Her Consent, Sweet Justice, and Dying to Remember, among other movies. In 1974, Gilbert became Laura Ingalls on Little House on the Prairie.

Melissa Gilbert says her mother told her that tampons were for putting on makeup.

Gilbert says in her autobiography, Prairie Tale, that her mother never told her how s3x worked or how to deal with her period. Gilbert wrote, "I didn't know the first thing about s3x—what it was or how it worked." "My mother never told me how things work. When I was 10, I found a box of tampons under the sink in her bathroom. When I asked what they were, she said they were for putting on makeup.

Gilbert was 14 at the time, and she still didn't know much about s3x. She says that she wanted to know what it was like to be close to someone, but her mother never talked to her about it.

Alison Arngrim was the one who taught Melissa Gilbert about tampons

Gilbert wrote about her life as a child and young woman in her book. She says that her co-star Arngrim taught her basic things like how to take care of herself (she played Nellie Oleson on Little House on the Prairie).

On camera, Gilbert and Arngrim hated each other, but behind the scenes, they were good friends. Gilbert says that Arngrim was a "good source of information" for her. Gilbert said that Arngrim had taught her how to use a tampon. She says that she used a glass of water to show how to put a tampon in.

"By the time I got my period for the first time at 15, Alison had already shown me how to use tampons with a glass of water, taught me about hygiene, and cleared up everything else," wrote Gilbert. Arngrim and Gilbert did a lot of firsts together.

Gilbert says that Arngrim was proud to say, "I have a pillow between my legs" when she got her period for the first time. Gilbert didn't understand what Arngrim was talking about at first, but she says that Arngrim later told her that she had her period and was wearing a sanitary pad.

In My Prairie Cookbook, Gilbert calls her friendship with Arngrim "one of the most important and longest-lasting friendships of my life." She says that Arngrim is like a sister to her. Gilbert wrote, "We are still close to this very day."
