Melissa Gilbert Recalls the 'Trauma' She Experienced on Set of 'Little House on the Prairie'

Melissa Gilbert still fantasizes about her experience on the set of Little House on the Prairie. The "Half-Pint" performer recalls her time on the TV show as "fairytale-like," and she adored going to work every day with her "family" of cast members.

Despite how much she enjoyed her behind-the-scenes experiences, Gilbert acknowledges that she had a traumatic experience while creating the pleasant series.

Melissa Gilbert, how old was she when she landed her role in 'Little House on the Prairie'?

Gilbert auditioned for her major part in Little House on the Prairie when she was just nine years old. She also got to read with Michael Landon, whom she instantly admired, during the audition.

"I read for him in a room at Paramount Studios," she says in Prairie Tale, her memoir. "I remember thinking to myself, Oh my god, he's so attractive." He exuded a distinct kind of energy than most individuals. It had more wattage."

Gilbert discusses the moment she found out she was cast in Little House on the Prairie in her memoir. The actor claims she discovered out through Michael Landon's daughter while they were both at school.

"I yelled and went to the office, where there was an emergency phone for students to use," Gilbert recalls. "I called home and informed my mother of what had occurred. As I did so, I had the sensation that booster rockets had ignited beneath me and that I was going to blast out into some wonderful, new, undiscovered universe."

Melissa Gilbert recalls her "only tragedy" on the set of "Little House on the Prairie."

In her memoir, Gilbert discusses how terrible her home life was in comparison to Little House on the Prairie. The actress admits that she comes from a damaged household full of lies and deception.

And, despite her parents' affection, she was trained not to exhibit her emotions. But it was almost surreal on set since Gilbert was finally allowed to express herself. She also grew to adore all of her cast and crew members.

"I truly liked everyone," Gilbert recalls of her Little House co-stars and staff members. "They were all pleasant. That wouldn't want to be around individuals who showered you with love and were always ready with a kind word, a joke, or a humorous face? It was like playing make-believe in comparison to the real world."

So, when Gilbert was forced to return to her real life, it was a devastating event.

"The only trauma on the Little House set occurred at the end of January, about four weeks after we began filming, when it was time to pack up and say good-bye," Gilbert writes. "It was difficult for me to return home."

Melissa Gilbert missed everyone on the 'Little House On The Prairie' set and was depressed when she returned home, missing the small family she had formed behind the scenes.

“I missed the work and the affirmation that came from it. I especially missed the attachments I’d made to people, and I was down in the dumps whenever I Imagined not seeing them again.
